在我睡着之前 Before I Fall Asleep
April. 2019
Personal Project
This short animation is a derivative work, inspired by one of my illustrations finished in 2019 in which I described the light spots, colors and lines both ephemeral and enigmatic I saw before I fall asleep.
I had a difficult time teaching myself the basics of animation making, and this was my maiden animation work. Most efforts, however, were put into controlling the narrative tempo and the transitions between scenes. Each frame of animation was completed with ease and relaxation. I manage to endow a dreamy and lightweight effect to my animation by doing the storyboard and the stylistic frame twice, imagining the dynamic version of my illustration.
Process
Step One: Study the reference collected and settle down the overall style; Draw the stylistic frame and a simple draft of storyboard.
Step Two: Self-taught the basics of animation; Make experiments with accessible techniques.
Step Three: Edit the storyboard; Settle down the important transitions.
Step Four: Draft out the story according to the background music; Finish each frame of animation, adding color; the final editing.
